The beaches of north-east Mallorca
Everyone falls in love with Mallorca. It is home to countless unique locations: the incredible Serra de Tramuntana mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site; its beaches and salt flats; its impeccable turquoise water that is always calm; its valleys
full of orange trees; its olive groves; and its small seaside towns that still look out to the sea every day.
The imposing Cathedral, the Paseo del Borne, the Paseo Marítimo, the local produce and food markets, the parks and urban beaches with their chill-out zones… Mallorca has secrets you’ll want to keep forever. It is a destination for everyone, with beautiful bays, beaches and coves where the crystal-clear water invokes an image of the Mediterranean Caribbean.
The beaches to be found only a short distance from Cala Ratjada, especially Cala Agulla and Cala Mesquida, are some of the best on the island, with white sand and turquoise water against a backdrop of pine trees and sand dunes.
Beautiful beaches
Cala Ratjada can be found in the north-east of the island, in the municipality of Capdepera. This area has successfully maintained a traditional atmosphere with its many fishing and recreational boats, which include the llaüt – typical Mallorcan boats that locals pass down from father to son. Discovering the charm and history of this place is part of the adventure when exploring the eastern shores of Mallorca. We recommend visiting the lighthouse in Cala Ratjada that was built during the 19th century and can be found at La Punta de Capdepera, a great spot to watch a beautiful sunset.
You will also find the palace owned by the March family close to Cala Ratjada. Called Sa Torre Cega, this villa was built on the site of an old lookout tower that was known as “Torre Cega” because it was invisible from other vantage points and only protected Cala Ratjada. The March Foundation has also created a sculpture garden with pieces by Chillida, Rodin and Henry Moore. Concerts are often held in these gardens during the summer.
Cala Agulla is one of the most idyllic bays you will find in north-east Mallorca. Nestled in a natural park, it offers sand dunes, pine forests and turquoise blue water to the delight of everyone who comes here. The place looks like something from a post card, with a very relaxed and casual atmosphere that attracts both tourists and
locals to this beach.
If the weather is not too hot, we recommend walking along the path that begins at the Cala Agulla beach, takes you through a very typical Mallorcan landscape and ends at the next bay along the coast, Cala Mesquida. Nature is the main protagonist on this walk along wooden pathways through the sand dunes to reach the next beach and its crystal-clear water.
Cala Mesquida is a beach located in the urbanisation of the same name seven kilometres from Capdepera. Everyone who visits this corner of the island falls in love with the impressive natural beauty. There is such a wide variety of birds to be found here that this stretch of the coastline has been officially protected. It is home to one of the largest colonies of seagulls and double-crested cormorants anywhere in the Balearic Islands. Cala Mesquida, Cala Moltó and Cala Agulla were declared a Natural Area of Special Interest by the Regional Government of the Balearic Islands in 1991.
Some exceptional sand dunes can be enjoyed from the footpaths around here, such as the ones that lead to Cala Mesquida or Cala Agulla. The further east you go from the beach, the more wild and natural the environment becomes. We recommend sticking to the indicated footpaths because many of the dunes are protected in order to preserve the natural beauty of this area.
Cala Mesquida is highly exposed to wind from the north, making it a paradise for windsurfing. We advise inexperienced swimmers not to venture too far into the sea as the currents usually flow away from the beach.
