Top travel experiences in Tenerife

Tenerife is an island where the coastline and cliffs look out over the Atlantic Ocean. This magical Spanish enclave is a beautiful location with wonderful islands: La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. The city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital and home to the famous carnival.

With more than 2,000 km² and a mild climate, Tenerife offers a perfect combination of its four strongest features: the Atlantic, wild nature, the most complete services and the always friendly and up-beat personality of its people.

On your trip to Tenerife be sure to immerse yourself in the culture of the Canary Islands and enjoy the experiences the island offers up for you.

Gastronomy

If you have visited other places in Spain, you’ll be surprised by the cuisine of the Canary Islands. The dishes reflect Latin American and Arab influences, with more spices, such as cumin, cayenne and dried chillies. Something you should know is that food and drink are a fundamental part of the lifestyle in Tenerife and they’re another way of socialising.

One of the basic products is gofio, roasted grain that is a substitute for bread and which can be mixed with almonds and figs to make sweet treats. Another dish not to be missed is the sancocho canario, salted fish with the typical Canary Island sauce, mojo. This sauce is the most evident example of Canary Island cuisine, and is often served with papas arrugadas (small, salty boiled potatoes cooked in their skins).

There is also a very notable coffee culture. And the locals have two very popular ways of serving it. One is “leche y leche”, which is coffee with condensed milk, normal milk and milk foam, served in a tall glass. And Tenerife is also the world capital of the “Barraquito”, which is made with coffee, natural milk, condensed milk, cinnamon, lemon rind and lemon.

Tenerife is the main source of wine, and the Tacoronte Acentejo red wine was the first wine from the Canary Islands to receive a Denominación de Origen (D.O.).

Guachinches

Guachinches are establishments found in the north of the island of Tenerife, where you can sample the island’s traditional cuisine and try the region’s local wines. They are unpretentious restaurants and they are where the locals most prefer to dine. If you go at the weekend, you might have trouble getting a table.

Lucha Canaria

One of the experiences that seems to be from another era is the Lucha Canaria, or Canarian Wrestling. Skill, strength and direct body contact ensure that Canarian wrestling is still enjoyed right across the island to this day. Canarian wrestling originated in the times of the native peoples of the Canary Islands, the inhabitants of the archipelago prior to the Spanish conquest in 1402. Ask about upcoming matches at any tourist information office.
