La Romana owes its name to an old Roman scale that was used to weigh goods that passed through the port. Some of the most well-known places in the city are the obelisk, Santa Rosa de Lima church, Central Park, Rotonda Park, or the monument to the Bible.

The obelisk monument was built in the 1950s during the dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, as a representation of his power over the people. Following the model of the monument to George Washington in Washington, D.C., the obelisk is a much smaller version in the centre of La Romana, painted on all four sides with contemporary and historical representations of Dominican life.
